The U.S. Navy has announced the testing of a laser weapon mounted on the USS Portland. The complex is officially known as Laser Weapon System Demonstrator Mk 2 Mod 0. The test itself took place on May 16 at an unspecified location in the Pacific Ocean. Whether it was the first for USS Portland is not reported.
This is not the first time that the U.S. Navy has installed a laser weapon system on its ships. It is known, in particular, that USS Ponce landing dock was equipped with a LaWS laser system during its deployment in the Middle East between 2014 and 2017. While in the 150-kilowatt class, the new weapon is much more powerful than the laser mounted on the USS Ponce.

Recall also that earlier it became known about the U.S. Navy plans to mount a 150-kilowatt laser on the USS Little Rock coastal ship of Freedom type. As a possible type of installation was called HELIOS from the company Lockheed Martin.
