According to Erdogan, such a decision can be taken in case of sanctions against Ankara.
ANCARA, December 15. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan confirmed on Sunday that his country may close the Incirlik airbase to the United States if Washington decides to impose sanctions on Ankara. He made a statement to this effect on A Haber TV channel.
This is not the first time that there is talk in Turkey about the possibility of closing this airbase to the U.S. military. However, no concrete steps in this direction have yet been taken.
Earlier, the U.S. Congress agreed on a military budget for fiscal year 2020, in which Democrats and Republicans expressed the view that the acquisition of Ankara S-400 falls under the provisions of the law “On Countering Russian Influence in Europe and Eurasia”, and this provides for the introduction of sanctions by the president. Legislators allowed the Pentagon to “spend up to $30 million to store six Turkish F-35 jet fighters that were previously used to train pilots in Turkey” at the U.S. airbase before Ankara was excluded from the program because of the purchase of S-400.
