Matthijs de Ligt has been named the best young player of 2019

PARIS, December 2. Dutch and Italian Juventus defender Matthijs de Ligt became the best player of 2019 among the players under 21 according to France Football magazine. The awards ceremony is held in Paris.

Last year the winner of the award was the forward of the French national team and PSG Kylian Mbappe.

Matthijs de Ligt last season played for the Dutch “Ajax”, which reached the semifinals of the Champions League, where the team from Amsterdam lost to the English “Tottenham” (1:0, 2:3). He is also the champion and winner of the Netherlands Cup, the finalist of the Europa League. In the summer of 2019, he moved from Ajax to Juventus for €75 million.

The second place went to the English forward of German Borussia Dortmund Jadon Sancho, the third place went to the Portuguese forward of Spanish Atletico Joao Felix.

Also, for the second time in history, “Golden Ball” was awarded to the best footballer of the year. The prize went to Megan Rapinoe, a midfielder for the U.S. national team and the American Reign FC, who won the 2019 World Cup and the International Football Federation’s World Player of the Year Award. Second place went to Frenchwoman Lucy Bronze, third place went to American Alex Morgan.
