President of Burundi Pierre Nkurunziza died of a heart attack. This was reported by the country’s authorities on their Twitter page.
“The Government of the Republic of Burundi reports with great regret on the sudden death of His Excellency Pierre Nkurunziza, President of the Republic of Burundi, <…> as a result of heart failure on June 8, 2020,” reads the report.

The President was ill on the night of June 7 and was hospitalized. Subsequently, Nkurunziza felt better, but already on the afternoon of the 8th, he was sharply ill. Doctors in the intensive care unit spent several hours fighting for his life, but the president was not saved.
It should be reminded that during the presidential elections held in Burundi on May 20, the victory was won by Evarist Ndayishimiye, who was supported by Nkurunziza. Nkurunziza’s presidency was to expire in August.
