The Russian armored personnel carrier suffered minor damage as a result of an explosive device detonation by militants in Syria, Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said on Tuesday.
“One Russian armored personnel carrier was slightly damaged as a result of an explosive device detonation by militants on the convoy’s route. The personnel of the joint patrol was not injured. All the equipment and Russian servicemen have returned to the deployment point,” he said.
According to Konashenkov, the incident took place on Tuesday during a joint patrol between the settlements of Erica and Urum-al-Jauz.
A representative of the Defense Ministry said that the militants tried to organize a terrorist attack “in order to disrupt the monitoring of the situation along the M-4 highway.
Konashenkov said that “the situation in the Syrian Arab Republic remains tense”.
He noted that the main efforts of the Russian group of troops are focused on stabilization of the situation in Idlib de-escalation zone and implementation of agreements on joint Russian-Turkish patrolling of the M-4 highway section. The agreement on this was reached by the Presidents of Russia and Turkey on March 5, 2020.
